Sookie: Will your blood ever wear off? I’m tired of dreaming about you.

Eric: No, it’s not just the blood. You know you have feelings for me.

Sookie: Ew.

Eric: You know you like this. And this. And you know you can’t trust Bill. That’s not my blood talking. It’s your survival instinct.

I always love analysing TB dreams; they are so well made that each time I can watch them and pick up something new or think about new possibilities that they present. This dream, albeit short, is wonderfully deep. It is remarkable because a short text contains several important concepts repeated a few times to highlight or reinforce the message: ‘know’ and ‘blood’ are 2 such examples.

Nothwithstanding the issue of blood which has been discussed many times, knowledge and instincts, 2 psychological categories are such interesting concepts to explore in this dream.

I noticed that both Sookie and Eric use the word “know” and several times thus highlighting its importance. Knowledge is one of the more complex cognitive processes in psychology, it embodies perception, communication, association and reasoning; while knowledge is also said to be related to the capacity of acknowledgment in human beings. Modern cognitive psychology is not just addressing traditional categories such as the ones mentioned above but also includes emotions, metacognition and metamemory. In philosophy, study of knowledge is called epistemology, analysing the nature of knowledge through connected notions of belief, truth and justification. So, it is interesting to view Sookie and Eric communicating through the prism of knowledge; knowledge that the setting is a dream but clearly recognising the reality: that the blood bond makes Sookie dream often of Eric, that she has feelings for Eric and she likes his touch and that she has issues of trust with Bill-even though she repeatedly questions Bill at this stage and she stops short of outright taking a more resolute action and a firmer approach, her instinct which is innate, a complex yet defining mechanism, and not something that Sookie may have conditioned herself and/or was conditioned by other factors to accept or respond. When she is able to strip the thick layers of conditioned behaviour, she is left with knowledge and instinct; they represent Sookie that needs to emerge and through individuation, from unconscious and ultimately immature psyche become a fully realised Self. Eric in this dream can be viewed as Sookie’s animus to her anima, perhaps in the final stage of its development: “In his fourth manifestation, the animus is the incarnation of meaning. On this highest level he becomes (like the anima) a mediator of…spiritual profundity”. Jung noted that “in mythology, this aspect of the animus appears as Hermes, messenger of the gods; in dreams he is a helpful guide.” Like Sophia this is the highest level of mediation between the unconscious and conscious mind.

Another important category is ‘survival instinct’. It was Freud who wrote about life and death (Eros and Thanatos) instincts extensively. The life instincts are those that deal with basic survival, pleasure, and reproduction. These instincts are important for sustaining the life of the individual as well as the continuation of the species. Jung described these instincts through Eros (feminine) and Logos (masculine). This gendering of Eros and Logos is a consequence of Jung’s theory of the anima/animus syzygy of the human psyche.

The reason I tend to view Eric as animus here is that there is a clear notion that it is not the influence of his blood, not an external element that prompts Sookie to address the issues of trust, feelings and plain survival. I imagine Eric sitting on the sofa looking at Sookie as if Sookie was facing herself in the magic mirror of truth.

This wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that Sookie’s trust in Bill is connected to her survival. It has become obvious that her blind trust in Bill was sorely misplaced and unwarranted, but it may not just adversely reflect on Sookie’s emotions, as hard as the betrayal and loss of love may be. If her unlimited trust in Bill compromises her own safety, her own life then she must grow to recognise that danger, even if it comes in a shape of her first lover. It is time to do away with romantic projection and see the truth and deal with it. Jung: “Taking back the projections” is a major task in the work of individuation, which involves owning and subjectivising unconscious forces which are initially regarded as alien.”

Sookie facing the truth about Bill consciously is something I would really like see come into fruition this season. Up until he turned into a pile of goo, she has been afraid to face the reality of who he really is, and the danger it presented. Which is understandable, plus the blood only added to the confusion. Now that Sookie has witnessed for herself that he is NOT ” Stronger than this” It will allow her to let go of the hold he has over her. Whether TB will go there to that extent is anyone’s guess. I would be happy with actions speaking louder than words in this case. Although he could do with a big does of reality thrown at him by her.

that is what we’re hanging around for I guess - at least I feel like I am. I don’t think we need long expositions with a power-point-type feel dialogue - but we need to see Sookie acknowledging what she went through and taking a stand.

Maybe if people would stop asking her questions or posting on her website and FB page, she would shut up.

the bold yes. this is a fandom that needs to learn it can’t win. yes it was a bunch of crap, she made no sense, it was bad writing and it was leading on etc etc etc… it’s in print, it’s out there and it’s not gonna change. talk about it as much as you want, but don’t go to her expecting her to admit she’s screwed it up - she won’t.

Yes, thank you. I get that a certain fatigue sets in for some, but it can be ignored or avoided (Savior, or just scrolling by).

This is her mess—let her own it and clean it up (or not). I’m actually getting a sort of pleasure at this point seeing her real self—and her real views of the characters—come out.

The crux of this horrible situation is that Harris lied to her fans for years, writing books they thought meant one thing, while she had a sort of hidden agenda that she wouldn’t write until the end because she didn’t want to torpedo her sales. The more incriminating stuff she says now, the less likely she is to get away with it in the future, and the more clear it becomes to (former) fans that she was, if not outright lying, shading the truth, for years. Let her dig the grave for her career. This is doubly entertaining—she’s doing the heavy lifting while I eat popcorn and watch.

I know it’s painful to hear these things from her, Eric and Sookie’s creator. But the characters have long outgrown the limited imagination of this petulant and foolish woman. Every quote from her proves it. There are blatant inconsistencies between what she says and what she wrote. She claims Eric’s all about himself, then writes him sacrificing 100 years of his life for Sookie and has to admit that’s a “huge” sacrifice. Clearly, the characters got so big that she unconsciously wrote stuff that contradicted what she consciously THINKS they are like. The more she posts, the more evident that disconnect becomes. The characters changed and grew, and she wouldn’t accept it and alter her original plan for the series. These posts just reveal the depths of her denial.

Sookie, let me introduce you to the real Bill Compton.

He’s got a point, all she wanted from people is her own version of the world then throw them away when they don’t meet her unrealistic expectations. She will never know the year Bill spent mourning for her, the real reason he spared Eric, all that he has done to make everyone around her even her safe or even realize she drive Bill into this. So yeah Sookie doesn’t know a damn thing about Bill Compton because she never bothered to and hoped he would give in to her simply because he once loved her.

So it’s Sookie’s fault of course and she didn’t try hard enough? In that year that Bill was “mourning” for Sookie, he was getting cozy with Katerina, having procurers and donors, scheming with Nan F, beginning to work with Portia and let Sookie’s house rot for all he cared?

And it was not Sookie’s fault Bill kept things from her or straight out lied to her. How could she then learn anything about Bill ? What did Bill do to make people around her ‘safe’? Who are those people that Bill made safe? When Sookie returned from FL, all she found was Bill advancing to a king and screwing Katerina in his newly renovated nouveau riche mansion. Not to mention the way he gets into bed with Salome at TA.

And don’t forget what Sookie said in S4E2: “If there’s one thing I learned from us being together every time I learned something new about you…I wound up wishing I didn’t know it.”

BLAME SOOKIE!
